On September 9, 2026, Apple introduced iPhone Duo in Cupertino, California, describing it in the press release as the first foldable iPhone. Apple's press release quoted John Ternus, Apple's CEO: "iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original."
This article was fact-checked on September 17, 2026, against the English and Traditional Chinese versions of Apple's official press release, Apple's Taiwan technical specifications page, and the Singapore edition of the press release. We have not tested the device ourselves: every performance, battery-life, scratch-resistance, and durability figure below is a number Apple measured or claims on its own, and is labeled "Apple states" or "Apple explains" throughout.
How Apple Defines This Phone
Apple states that iPhone Duo, when open, is the thinnest iPhone ever made; Ternus also said the phone has the largest display ever on iPhone, while still folding down to fit easily in a pocket. Both statements are Apple's own description.
iPhone Duo's outer display is 5.4 inches and its inner display is 7.6 inches; both share the same aspect ratio, so content scales proportionally, and both support ProMotion, Always On, and up to 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Apple states the outer display provides 90% of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro, and the inner display is 50% larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max; a footnote explains that measured as a standard rectangular shape, the inner display is 7.58 inches diagonally and the outer display is 5.36 inches diagonally, with the actual viewable area smaller.
Body and Display Specifications
The body is made of grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished enclosure, and the hinge cover is 3D-printed with a micro bead-blasted finish; the back is Ceramic Shield. Apple states only that Ceramic Shield 2 is used on the front, or outer display, with 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation. The inner display uses a different protection scheme: a scratch-resistant coating plus a nano-texture layer made of a custom polymer that Apple says has up to 40% higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry; the folding panel is also reinforced with high-strength glass, a custom adhesive, and a titanium plate underneath.
The hinge is built from more than 100 components that precisely control opening and closing and support the center of the display, paired with an integrated magnet array that delivers the closure. The inner display's resolution is 1878 x 2670 pixels at 430 ppi, and the outer display is 1398 x 2034 pixels at 460 ppi; a FaceTime camera is hidden beneath the inner display and stays out of sight when not in use. Apple states the nano-texture surface reduces glare and reflections and minimizes the visibility of the crease.
The technical specifications page lists "Apple Pencil (USB-C) supported" under the display specs, with a footnote stating "This feature is coming later this year"; the press release likewise says later this year. Neither gives an exact date or iOS version, so this is not necessarily available on launch day.

Durability, Battery, and Cameras
Water and dust resistance is rated IP68; Apple notes this was tested under controlled laboratory conditions to IEC standard 60529, to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes, and that the protection is not permanent and will decrease with wear. As of this article's check on September 17, 2026, the press releases and technical specifications page did not include any spec for hinge durability or fold count on the folding body.
iPhone Duo is powered by A20 Pro, the same chip used in iPhone 18 Pro models, built on a 2-nanometer process. Apple states: the 6-core CPU is up to 20% faster than A19 Pro, delivering the fastest CPU in a smartphone; the 7-core GPU is up to 40% faster and more power efficient; the new dual 16-core Neural Engine delivers 2x the compute; unified memory bandwidth is increased by 50%; and, paired with the cooling system, sustained performance is up to 35% better than iPhone 17 Pro.
iPhone Duo has a dual-battery design, with one high-energy battery on each side of the body, working together through the chip and a power-balancing algorithm. Apple states: up to 31 hours of video playback using only the inner display, up to 44 hours using only the outer display, and up to 24 hours of usage per charge when both displays are used equally — that 24-hour figure is general usage, not video playback. For charging, Apple states wired charging reaches up to 50% in about 20 minutes, and wireless charging with a MagSafe or Qi2 charger reaches up to 50% in about 30 minutes; this pairing matches between the English press release and the Taiwan technical specifications page, but the Traditional Chinese press release put MagSafe or Qi2 on the 20-minute side instead, and this article follows the former. The specifications page further notes the 20-minute figure requires a 60W or higher adapter paired with a USB-C charging cable, and the 30-minute figure requires a 35W or higher adapter paired with a MagSafe Charger; both adapters and the MagSafe Charger are sold separately and are not included in the box.
The main camera is a 48MP Fusion Main camera with built-in optical-quality 2x telephoto; Apple states it has zero shutter lag and excellent low-light performance. The Ultra Wide camera is also 48MP, with specs Apple says match the iPhone 18 Pro models, and it supports macro photography. Apple explains that folding also brings several features of its own: Smart Take, where an on-device AI model on A20 Pro analyzes the scene and captures a photo automatically; Duo Preview, which shows a live preview on the outer display; Kid Cue, which plays an animation on the outer display to catch a child's attention; and Duo FaceTime, which lets people nearby join a call through the outer display.
Taiwan Launch: Timing, Pricing, and eSIM
Apple's Traditional Chinese press release places Taiwan in the first wave, writing 「……台灣、阿聯酋、英國、美國和越南等超過 63 個國家和地區」 (…Taiwan, the UAE, the UK, the US, and Vietnam, among more than 63 countries and regions), with pre-orders opening at 8 p.m. Taiwan time on October 16 and availability starting October 23; another 28 countries and regions get availability from October 30, though none of the four official pages checked for this article list which ones. But Apple's English and Singapore press releases both say "more than 70 countries and regions," and name different members: Brazil appears on those two lists but not on the Traditional Chinese one. Both are official Apple pages, so this article presents them side by side rather than treating either one as the single number.
US pricing starts at $1,999, and Taiwan pricing starts at NT$74,900; both markets offer 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities. But the press releases only give the starting price in each case, without listing prices for individual capacities, and the Traditional Chinese press release does not give any installment or monthly payment figures either.
iPhone Duo uses an eSIM-only design worldwide, with no physical SIM tray. Apple explains that eSIM is an industry standard supported by more than 500 carriers worldwide; the Traditional Chinese press release names Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and FarEasTone among them, but only as examples, not a complete list. On connectivity, the N1 chip supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread; the English press release states the C2 modem system now supports mmWave in the US, while the Taiwan model A3720 lists only sub-6 GHz bands, and the pages checked for this article show no mmWave spec for it.
Where Software and AI Stop: iOS 27.1, Split View, and Apple Intelligence
The technical specifications page lists iPhone Duo as running iOS 27, while the English and Traditional Chinese press releases both say it will ship with iOS 27.1; none of these pages explain the relationship between the two. To fit the folding body, iOS 27 moves Lock Screen controls, the Dock, and app navigation to the side; when the body is open it shows two Home Screen pages with Today View on the left, and Dynamic Island shifts to a vertical position on the side. Apple states the new Split View lets users open two apps side by side on iPhone for the first time, and also open two windows of the same app and save the pairing; StandBy is upgraded to work on either the inner or outer display even when the device is not charging.
The press release states Apple Intelligence will be available with iOS 27 on September 14, and the official language list includes both Traditional and Simplified Chinese. Siri AI is on a separate timeline: it rolls out the same day as an English beta with iOS 27, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish expected to be added in October; Traditional Chinese is not yet in the announced language rollout, and Siri AI will not be available initially on iOS in the EU, or to users under 13.
Frequently asked questions
When can Taiwan pre-order iPhone Duo, and when does it arrive?
Pre-orders in Taiwan open at 8 p.m. Taiwan time on October 16, with availability from October 23, at an official price starting at NT$74,900; another 28 countries and regions get availability from October 30, but none of the four official pages checked for this article list which 28. Apple's Traditional Chinese press release places Taiwan in the first wave and says 「超過 63 個國家和地區」 (more than 63 countries and regions), while the English and Singapore versions say more than 70; both are Apple's own official pages, worded differently, and this article presents them side by side.
Does iPhone Duo have a physical SIM tray?
No. iPhone Duo uses an eSIM-only design worldwide, and the technical specifications page lists storage for eight or more eSIMs. Apple explains that more than 500 carriers worldwide support eSIM; the Traditional Chinese press release names Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and FarEasTone among them, but this is only a set of examples, not a complete list.
How many times can iPhone Duo fold? How durable is it?
As of this article's check of the press releases and the Taiwan technical specifications page on September 17, 2026, there is no published spec for fold count or hinge lifespan. What has been published is IP68 water and dust resistance; Apple notes the testing was done under controlled laboratory conditions to IEC standard 60529, to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes, and that the protection is not permanent and will decrease with wear, with liquid damage not covered by the warranty.
How long does iPhone Duo's battery last?
Apple states up to 31 hours of video playback using only the inner display, up to 44 hours using only the outer display, and up to 24 hours of usage per charge when both displays are used equally — that 24-hour figure means general usage, not video playback. A footnote states these figures were measured by Apple in August 2026 using pre-production units and software connected to LTE and 5G networks; we have not tested the device ourselves. The 20-minute and 30-minute charging figures come from a separate footnote, where Apple states testing was done in July 2026 using pre-production units and software — the two sets of figures are not from the same test.
Does iPhone Duo support Apple Pencil?
Apple states that later this year it will support Apple Pencil (USB-C), usable on either display. The Taiwan technical specifications page lists "Apple Pencil (USB-C) supported" under the display specs, with a footnote stating "This feature is coming later this year"; neither gives an exact date or iOS version, so this is not necessarily available on launch day.
Does Siri AI support Traditional Chinese?
Not as of the press release this article checked on September 17, 2026. Siri AI rolls out as an English beta with iOS 27 on September 14, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish expected to be added in October; Traditional Chinese is not yet on the announced language rollout. Apple Intelligence's language list, by contrast, already includes Traditional Chinese — the two are separate features on separate timelines.
