Taipei night markets: Shilin, Raohe, Ningxia, Tonghua and Nanjichang, with MRT exits, hours and the Michelin stalls
How to pick a Taipei night market and eat your way through it: the nearest MRT station and exit, official hours, what to order and how to say it, paying and queueing, when to beat the crowds, and the stalls the city lists as Michelin Bib Gourmand picks, checked in September 2026.
Updated: About 11 min read

A Taipei night market is a street that turns into a dinner queue at dusk. Stalls light up from late afternoon, many sell just one or two things, and the city's market office calls the food coin-priced (銅板價). The hard part is not eating: it is choosing between markets that feel nothing alike, getting there, and knowing how ordering and paying work before you reach the front of a line.
This guide covers the five markets visitors ask about most: Shilin (士林夜市), Raohe Street (饒河街觀光夜市), Ningxia (寧夏夜市), Linjiang Street, better known as Tonghua (臨江街觀光夜市, 通化街夜市), and Nanjichang (南機場夜市). Hours, exits and walking times come from the Taipei City Market Administration Office (臺北市市場處), which licenses the markets, Taipei Metro and Taipei Travel, checked on 13 September 2026.

Shilin Night Market: Jiantan station, 17:00 to 24:00. Ningxia: about 10 minutes from Shuanglian exit 1 or 8 minutes from Zhongshan exit 5, 18:00 to 24:00. Raohe Street: about 3 minutes from Songshan exits 1, 2 or 5, one lane of about 600 m, 17:00 to 24:00. Linjiang Street (Tonghua): about 10 minutes from Xinyi Anhe exit 4 or 15 minutes from Liuzhangli, 18:00 to 24:00. Nanjichang: no MRT station, about 20 minutes on foot from Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall or 25 from Ximen, or a bus to the Nanjichang Apartments stop; licensed 05:00 to 24:00, stall hours vary. Times from the Taipei City Market Administration Office and Taipei Metro, checked September 2026.
These are licensed hours: each stall sets its own start time and day off, so the opening time is when the first stalls light up. No market-wide closing day is listed for Raohe, Ningxia, Linjiang or Nanjichang, and over Lunar New Year 2026 (16 to 21 February) the office said all five kept normal hours.
Market by market
Shilin: the biggest, and not only food
The market office calls Shilin Taipei's largest night market by area and the one foreign visitors know best. It has grown around the Cixian Temple (慈諴宮) on Danan Road (大南路) for about a century. Get off at Jiantan (劍潭), the station the office names; Taipei Travel also lists Shilin (士林), one stop north. Between snack stalls are cheap clothes, toys and gadgets, and Taipei Travel notes that clothes and accessories can be bargained for; don't haggle over food. By the temple, 士林廟口阿輝麵線 at 52 Danan Road (15:30–23:00) is the vermicelli stall the office says has been on Michelin's recommended list for years: the one with the Michelin sign in the photo at the top.
Raohe Street: one lane, start to finish
Raohe Street was approved in 1987 as Taiwan's first government-planned tourist night market, and it is still the easiest to read: one lane of about 600 m hung with red lanterns, starting in front of Songshan Ciyou Temple (松山慈祐宮). From MRT Songshan (松山), exits 1, 2 and 5 all work and the walk is about 3 minutes; walk up one side and back down the other. The queue at stall No. 2, in front of 249 Raohe Street, is for 福州世祖胡椒餅: pepper buns stuck to the wall of a clay oven at 200 to 300°C, 40 to 50 per batch. At stall No. 127, 陳董藥燉排骨 has simmered pork ribs with more than ten Chinese herbs for about 30 years. The office lists both as Bib Gourmand picks in 2018 and 2019.

Ningxia: all about the food
Ningxia Road (寧夏路) packs about 180 stalls and shopfronts into 300 m and is known for food above all. From MRT Shuanglian (雙連) take exit 1 and walk about 10 minutes along Minsheng West Road (民生西路), or from Zhongshan (中山) take exit 5 and walk about 8 minutes along Nanjing West Road (南京西路). The office calls it a model market: Taiwan's first smoke-free and first mobile-payment night market, where no two stalls within ten of each other may sell the same thing, and many stalls offer menus in English, Japanese, Korean and French. Its Michelin names are 方家雞肉飯 (chicken rice, stall No. 60), 豬肝榮仔 (pork liver), 圓環邊蚵仔煎 (oyster omelette) and 劉芋仔 (crispy taro balls, stall No. 91), where the office's profile mentions waits of 30 minutes to an hour.

Linjiang Street, or Tonghua: dinner near Taipei 101
Locals call it Tonghua Street night market (通化街夜市) after the street that crosses it; officially it is Linjiang Street Tourist Night Market (臨江街觀光夜市), running along Linjiang Street from Tonghua Street to Keelung Road (基隆路). From MRT Xinyi Anhe (信義安和) take exit 4 toward Tonghua Street, about 10 minutes, or exit 3 if you need an escalator; from Liuzhangli (六張犁) it is about 15 minutes along Keelung Road. Taipei Metro points to its fashion stalls, barbecue, fire-and-ice rice balls (冰火湯圓), sweet potato balls (地瓜球) and pan-fried buns, and on a 2025 festival visit the office described the braised-snack stall 梁記滷味 as a Bib Gourmand pick. Open 18:00–24:00, it is the natural late dinner after Taipei 101.
Nanjichang: no MRT, all neighbourhood
Nanjichang means south airfield: planes used this ground before Songshan Airport was built, and after the war the government built housing here for military families; as more people came and went, food stalls gathered in the lanes. It sits between Lanes 307 and 315 of Zhonghua Road Section 2 (中華路二段). Walk about 20 minutes from Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂) along Nanhai Road (南海路) or 25 from Ximen (西門), or take bus 12, 204, 205, 212, 223, 249, 250, 670, 671, 673 or Blue 29 (藍29) to the Nanjichang Apartments stop (南機場公寓). Plan around two stalls: 山內雞肉 at the entrance, with poached chicken, chicken-oil rice and soup (17:00–24:00), and the nameless pushcart flatbread stall 無名推車燒餅 at stall No. 72 (16:30–20:00), which usually sells out around 20:00.
What to eat, and how to order it
- Pepper bun (胡椒餅): marinated pork and plenty of spring onion in sesame-topped dough, baked on the wall of a clay oven. Let it cool a minute.
- Oyster omelette (蚵仔煎): oysters, egg and greens in a sweet potato starch batter under a sweet red sauce; 蝦仁煎 is the shrimp version.
- Sausage in sticky rice (大腸包小腸): a grilled pork sausage inside a glutinous rice sausage, eaten like a hot dog.
- Chicken cutlet (雞排): flattened, fried or charcoal-grilled, dusted with pepper salt or chilli salt.
- Vermicelli (麵線): thick noodle soup with braised intestine or oysters, garlic, vinegar and coriander.
- Herbal pork rib soup (藥燉排骨): ribs slow-cooked with Chinese herbs in a clear, slightly sweet broth.
- Braised snacks (滷味) and stinky tofu (臭豆腐): at a braised-snack stall you pick your pieces and get them back heated and cut.
- Sweet: taro balls (芋丸), sweet potato balls (地瓜球), douhua (豆花, tofu pudding), shaved ice, and bubble tea (珍珠奶茶) with your choice of sugar (甜度) and ice (冰塊).
- Ordering: point, hold up fingers, and say 內用 to eat there or 外帶 to take away. At takeaway counters you usually pay as you order; at stalls with tables, copy the next table.
Michelin Bib Gourmand stalls the city lists
The Bib Gourmand is Michelin's value-for-money distinction, and in Taipei it reaches night-market stalls. This table lists only stalls the market office itself describes as Michelin picks, with the year it gives.
| Market | Stall | Order | What the market office says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raohe Street | 福州世祖胡椒餅, stall No. 2 | Pepper bun | Bib Gourmand 2018 and 2019 |
| Raohe Street | 陳董藥燉排骨, stall No. 127 | Herbal pork rib soup | Bib Gourmand 2018 and 2019 |
| Ningxia | 方家雞肉飯, stall No. 60 | Chicken rice, braised tofu | Bib Gourmand 2019; closed Mondays |
| Ningxia | 劉芋仔, stall No. 91 | Crispy taro balls, egg-yolk taro cake | Bib Gourmand recommendation |
| Ningxia | 豬肝榮仔 and 圓環邊蚵仔煎 | Pork liver; oyster omelette | Named among the market's Bib Gourmand stalls |
| Linjiang Street | 梁記滷味 | Braised snacks | Bib Gourmand recommendation (2025 festival visit) |
| Nanjichang | 山內雞肉, at the entrance | Poached chicken, chicken-oil rice | Bib Gourmand 2018; closed Saturdays |
| Nanjichang | 無名推車燒餅, stall No. 72 | Sesame flatbreads | Bib Gourmand in consecutive years |
| Shilin | 士林廟口阿輝麵線 | Vermicelli with intestine and oysters | On Michelin's recommended list for several years |
Paying, queueing and beating the crowds
Bring cash in small notes and coins. Cards and phones are arriving slowly: the office credits Ningxia with being Taiwan's first mobile-payment night market, Shilin's Ahui vermicelli stall has adopted e-payment, and the city's 2026 Night Market Festival ran its discounts through two Taiwanese payment apps, 悠遊付 and 全支付. Unless a stall shows a sign for a payment method you already use, pay cash.
- One line per stall: join the back, decide while you wait, order at the front, then step aside.
- Go early on a weekday. Stalls start from 17:00 at Shilin and Raohe and 18:00 at Ningxia and Linjiang. The office describes weekend queues at Raohe's pepper-bun stall running past the gate, and waits of 20 to 30 minutes at Nanjichang's chicken stall at mealtimes.
- Do the sell-out stalls first: Nanjichang's flatbread stall usually runs out around 20:00, and Michelin's note on 山內雞肉, quoted by the office, says to come before 20:00 for a chicken leg.
- Tables belong to the stall that set them out; eat street snacks out of the flow of people.
- Do not smoke, and bargain only for clothes, never for food.
Which one tonight?
- First night in Taipei: Raohe Street. One lane, 3 minutes from MRT Songshan.
- Here for the food: Ningxia, with several Michelin-listed stalls in 300 m.
- A long evening of snacks and shopping: Shilin, on a weekday.
- After Taipei 101: Linjiang Street (Tonghua), open until midnight.
- The neighbourhood version, and you do not mind a bus: Nanjichang, with cash.
- Two more by MRT: Huaxi Street (華西街觀光夜市), 5 minutes from Longshan Temple (龍山寺) exit 1, and Yansan (延三夜市), 3 minutes from Daqiaotou (大橋頭) exit 1A, which Taipei Metro says has the densest cluster of Bib Gourmand picks.
Before you go: entry and language
Entry: passports from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, EU countries, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea get 90 days visa-free; Singapore and Malaysia get 30 days, and Thailand, the Philippines and Brunei 14 days under a scheme running to 31 July 2027. Bring a passport valid for six months on arrival (US and Japanese passports only need to cover the stay) and an onward ticket; the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) list is the one that counts. Foreign visitors also file the free online Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) at twac.immigration.gov.tw within 7 days before arrival (arrival day included). Language: stall signs are Chinese first, apart from Ningxia's bilingual signs and menus. Elsewhere, point and use the phrases above.
