Otaru is one of the easiest day trips from Sapporo: one JR train takes just over half an hour, and the canal is a ten-minute walk from the station. Most sights fit between Otaru and Minami-Otaru stations. The real decision is how to divide your day: seafood at the market in the morning, shopping and walking by day, staying for the evening lights, or setting aside another half-day for the whisky distillery in Yoichi. This is a closer look at Day 2 of our three-day Sapporo itinerary. First come JR and express-bus options and fares; then a walk from Otaru Station to Minami-Otaru Station. Separate sections cover Mt. Tengu Ropeway, Yoichi Distillery, the winter Snow Light Path and the last train. JR Hokkaido, the Otaru Tourism Association and the facilities' official sites were checked in September 2026.
Sapporo to Otaru: JR Rapid Airport in as little as 32 minutes, express bus ¥730
The adult JR Hakodate Line fare from Sapporo to Otaru is ¥800 after JR Hokkaido's 1 April 2025 revision. Tap a Suica, ICOCA or similar IC card at the gate. Rapid Airport leaves Sapporo about every 30 minutes by day, around the hour and half-hour. The September 2026 timetable shows journeys of 34–41 minutes, while the Otaru Tourism Association gives a fastest time of 32 minutes. Within Otaru city it stops only at Otaru-Chikko, Minami-Otaru and Otaru. Local trains run once or twice an hour, stop everywhere and take about 45–50 minutes. If the next departure is a local, the difference is small enough to take it. A reserved u-Seat costs ¥1,000 extra, or ¥800 for the ticketless Ekinet mobile version; it is unnecessary for such a short ride. Some Rapid Airport trains run directly between New Chitose Airport and Otaru, as fast as 73 minutes according to JR—handy if your first or last night is in Otaru. The Hokkaido Chuo Bus express service, Kosoku Otaru-go (高速おたる号), leaves from Sapporo Station Front and reaches Otaru Station Front in about 60 minutes. An adult one-way ticket is ¥730, with buses roughly every 5–10 minutes by day. That is ¥70 cheaper than JR but nearly twice as slow, and slower still in snow. It mainly makes sense if you are staying beside its stop or JR has been suspended by heavy snow.
| Mode | Travel time | Adult fare | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| JR Rapid Airport | Fastest 32 min; September 2026 timetable shows 34–41 min | ¥800 (add ¥1,000 for reserved u-Seat) | About every 30 min by day; in Otaru city stops only at Otaru-Chikko, Minami-Otaru and Otaru |
| JR local train | About 45–50 min | ¥800 | One or two an hour, stopping at every station; departures from Otaru after 19:27 are all local trains |
| Kosoku Otaru-go express bus (Chuo Bus) | About 60 min; longer in snow | ¥730 | Sapporo Station Front to Otaru Station Front, about every 5–10 min by day |
Start at Otaru Station or get off first at Minami-Otaru?
Minami-Otaru is the stop before Otaru on Rapid Airport. It is about five minutes' walk from there to the Otaru Music Box Museum at the end of Sakaimachi Street. You can browse along Sakaimachi to the canal and return from Otaru Station. In the reverse direction, start at Otaru Station with breakfast at Sankaku Market, visit the canal, then explore Sakaimachi and leave from Minami-Otaru. Both walks cover the same places; choose by arrival time. If you arrive early, begin at Otaru Station when the market is liveliest. If you arrive after noon and want the canal at dusk, get off at Minami-Otaru first.

Upper half: the JR Hakodate Line runs from Sapporo through Otaru-Chikko and Minami-Otaru to Otaru; Rapid Airport takes as little as 32 minutes for ¥800, the express bus about 60 minutes for ¥730, and a local train from Otaru to Yoichi about 25 minutes. Lower half: walk one minute from Otaru Station to Sankaku Market, ten minutes to Chuo Bridge on Otaru Canal (about 40 minutes for a cruise), five minutes to Sakaimachi Street, onward to the Music Box Museum, and five minutes more to Minami-Otaru Station. A bus from Otaru Station Front also reaches Mt. Tengu Ropeway in about 20 minutes for ¥240.

One-day walk: Sankaku Market, Otaru Canal and Sakaimachi Street
Sankaku Market: seafood rice bowls beside Otaru Station
Sankaku Market is one minute to the left as you leave Otaru Station. It occupies a sloping passage about 200 metres long and two metres wide, with 16 businesses including six eateries. The Otaru Tourism Association lists market hours of 6:00–17:00 year-round, though individual shop hours differ. Its appeal is an early seafood breakfast: sea urchin, salmon roe and crab rice bowls are available after eight, before many central Sapporo markets open. Staff may invite you in; check the photo menus and prices at each entrance without spending too long comparing. Afterwards, return to the street directly in front of the station, Chuo-dori, and walk straight toward the sea.
Otaru Canal and its cruise: 40 minutes, ¥1,800 by day or ¥2,000 at night
Walk about ten minutes from Otaru Station down Chuo-dori toward the harbour to Chuo Bridge on Otaru Canal. The canal is 1,140 metres long, with warehouses on the opposite bank; the Asakusa Bridge end is the usual daytime photo spot. Otaru Canal Cruise sells tickets and boards at Chuo Bridge. Adults pay ¥1,800 for a daytime departure or ¥2,000 at night; primary-school children and infants pay ¥500, though one infant per accompanying adult rides free. Each cruise lasts about 40 minutes. Buy at the counter at least 15 minutes before sailing, or online up to one hour before. At the time checked, daytime boats began at 10:00 and ran every 30 minutes, with night boats from 18:00. First and last departures vary by month and sunset, so check the current official timetable. Cruises continue in winter with a roof and heated seats, warmer than standing on the bank. From the night boat, the illuminated warehouses and gas lamps look especially good; schedule the canal near the end of your day if taking that sailing.
Sakaimachi Street: Kitaichi Glass, the Music Box Museum, Rokkatei and Kitakaro
Walk five minutes southeast from the canal into Sakaimachi Street, a roughly 900-metre old shopping street of stone warehouses repurposed as shops. Stops include Kitaichi Glass No. 3 and its adjoining oil-lamp-lit Kitaichi Hall café, Otaru branches of Rokkatei and Kitakaro, and the LeTAO main store, birthplace of its double fromage cheesecake. At the far end stands the main Otaru Music Box Museum, with a steam clock outside that whistles at set times. The museum opens 9:00–18:00 year-round; floors 2 and 3 close at 17:45. Check official sites for Kitaichi Glass and sweet-shop hours. Allow two to three hours for the street. Dessert shops often queue in the afternoon, so try a fresh dessert first, then continue browsing. Minami-Otaru JR Station is about five minutes' walk from the museum and is the easiest place to board your return train.

Optional extra: the Mt. Tengu Ropeway night view
Mt. Tengu overlooks Otaru Harbour; its official site calls the view one of Hokkaido's three great night views. From bay 4 of the Otaru Station Front bus terminal, take Chuo Bus route 9, Tenguyama Ropeway Line, to its terminus in about 20 minutes. Adult fare is ¥240, child fare ¥120, and there are two or three buses an hour. The ropeway departs every 12 minutes, or every six when busy. Two seasons have different fares. In summer (25 April–3 November 2026), a round trip costs ¥1,800 adult or ¥900 child, a one-way ticket ¥1,080 or ¥540; uphill services run 9:00–20:48 and downhill until 21:00. In winter (28 November 2026–28 March 2027), a round trip costs ¥2,000 adult or ¥1,000 child. On ordinary winter days, the last uphill car is at 19:48 and downhill at 20:00; on 31 December and 2–3 January, the last uphill is at 16:48 and downhill at 17:00; on 1 January, the last uphill is at 15:48 and downhill at 16:00. There is no service in the gap between the two seasons. The mountain is a ski area in winter and ropeway cars are shared with skiers; there is a sledding area on top. If you also use city buses, an adult city-bus day ticket costs ¥800 at the Otaru Station Front counter and gives a ropeway discount; check the official site for the discount amount.

Farther west: Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery
Yoichi lies west of Otaru. A JR Hakodate Line local train takes 25–27 minutes from Otaru (Nikka says about 30), but runs infrequently. The September 2026 timetable lists daytime Otaru departures for Yoichi at 9:36, 10:59, 12:24, 13:49, 14:49 and 15:36, and Yoichi departures back at 10:23, 12:37, 13:43, 15:02, 16:01 and 17:11. There is a gap of more than two hours between 10:23 and 12:37, so plan both trains first. Check JR for the fare. If you miss a train, a Chuo Bus from Otaru Station Front toward Yoichi, Niseko or Iwanai takes about 40 minutes; get off at Yoichi-ekimae Jujigai and walk two minutes. The distillery is five minutes from Yoichi Station, marked by its red-roofed drying tower. The free guided tour must be reserved on the official site. Reservations open up to four weeks ahead for groups of one to nine; commentary is in Japanese only. After the tour, eligible visitors can taste three types of whisky, one glass of each. Visitors driving a car or motorcycle, arriving by bicycle, under 20, or pregnant or nursing cannot sample alcohol; soft drinks are available. Visitors under 20 cannot join a guided tour on their own. Call to ask about any same-day places. Without a booking you can still enter designated areas, but not the outdoor production area, and there is no guide. The grounds open 9:15–16:15, with last entry at 15:30; last orders at the paid tasting bar are 16:00, the restaurant runs 10:00–15:50, and the distillery closes 23 December–7 January and on 11 June. Consider Yoichi first: take the 9:36 from Otaru, arrive 10:02, book a tour shortly after ten, eat lunch, and take the 12:37 back, arriving Otaru at 13:01. Spend the afternoon on the Otaru walk and save the canal for dusk.

Otaru in winter: Snow Light Path, 6–13 February 2027, and icy pavements
Otaru Snow Light Path places snow lanterns and candles around the canal and former Temiya railway line. The Otaru Tourism Association has announced 6–13 February 2027, while venues and lighting times will be published later; check again before leaving. The dates overlap the Sapporo Snow Festival, so leave the evening for Otaru if combining both events and book accommodation early as you would for the Sapporo festival.
- Footwear: Sakaimachi slopes and the canal has stone paving; in January and February the surface can be compacted ice. Buy slip-on traction cleats at a Sapporo convenience store or drugstore before travelling to Otaru.
- Winter darkness comes early, so the canal lights and Mt. Tengu night view are visible around dusk. You do not have to stay very late or race for the last train back to Sapporo.
- Heavy snow can suspend a whole JR section. Check JR Hokkaido service information before leaving in the morning, especially in winter. If trains stop, use the express bus or move the trip to another day instead of waiting on the platform.
- The canal cruise runs in winter with a roof and heated seats. Mt. Tengu's last downhill ropeway is at 20:00 on ordinary winter days, but at 17:00 on 31 December and 2–3 January, and 16:00 on 1 January. Bring gloves and a hat against the wind at the summit.

Luggage storage and the last train to Sapporo
For a day trip from a Sapporo hotel, leave luggage there if possible. Otaru Station has coin lockers, but large ones fill early during peak periods. The station's tourist information counter opens 9:00–18:00. Near the canal, the Otaru International Information Center at Minatomachi 5-3 opens 9:00–20:00 and the Otaru Canal Tourist Information Center 9:00–18:00; both have paid lockers, with prices posted on site. For the last return to Sapporo, the September 2026 timetable shows a 23:08 local train from Otaru arriving 23:53, preceded by a 22:31 arriving 23:17. All departures after 19:27 are local trains and take about ten minutes longer. In the opposite direction, the last Sapporo-to-Otaru train leaves at 23:50 and arrives at 0:36 the next day, useful for anyone staying in Otaru after an evening in Sapporo. Timetables change with the season; check JR Hokkaido before travelling.
Before you go
- Check JR Hokkaido service information before leaving, particularly in winter, for suspensions or delays on Otaru-bound trains.
- For a night canal cruise, check that month's official timetable and reach the Chuo Bridge ticket counter at least 15 minutes before departure.
- Reserve the Yoichi distillery tour on Nikka's official site and note train times both from Otaru to Yoichi and back.
- Check Mt. Tengu's season: a round trip costs ¥1,800 in summer and ¥2,000 in winter, with no ropeway service for a few weeks between seasons in November.
- In winter, bring traction cleats, gloves, a hat and waterproof footwear. If carrying luggage, reach the station early for a locker.
