After collecting your luggage, walk out from Level 2 of Kansai Airport Terminal 1 and you will reach Kansai Airport Station. JR West and Nankai Electric Railway share the same station building, with JR on one side and Nankai on the other. Limousine bus stops are directly outside the first floor, and the taxi stands are also on the first floor. Finding them is not the problem: the five options have different fares and destinations, so first-time visitors can easily pay twice as much as necessary or end up at a station far from their hotel.

The short answer: for Kyoto or Shin-Osaka, take the JR Limited Express HARUKA; for Namba or Shinsaibashi, take the Nankai Rapi:t or Airport Express; for Umeda, around Osaka Station, take the Kansai Airport Rapid or limousine bus. Consider a bus or taxi if you have lots of luggage, are traveling in a group, or arrive late at night. Every option below includes fares, travel times, and ticket-buying instructions verified on each operator’s official website in 2026/9.

JR Limited Express HARUKA: Easiest for Kyoto and Shin-Osaka

HARUKA is JR West’s airport limited express, with reserved seats throughout and roughly one daytime service every 30 minutes. The timetable revised on 2026/3/14 shows the first weekday departure from Kansai Airport at 6:31 and the last at 22:16. Trains stop at Tennoji, Osaka, Shin-Osaka, and Kyoto. Some early and late services also stop at Hineno and Izumi-Fuchu, while some continue to Kusatsu and Yasu. Take the 10:16 service as an example: it reaches Tennoji at 10:48, Osaka at 11:01, Shin-Osaka at 11:06, and Kyoto at 11:34. Reaching Kyoto from Kansai Airport in 78 minutes without a transfer is its greatest advantage. Regular fares are not cheap. Including the base fare and reserved-seat limited express ticket, Kansai Airport to Tennoji costs 2,350 yen, Osaka 2,910 yen, Shin-Osaka 3,070 yen, and Kyoto 3,590 yen, according to JR West’s official timetable and fare search, verified in 2026/9. International visitors therefore almost always buy the “HARUKA One-way Ticket.” It is available only to holders of non-Japanese passports who entered Japan with Temporary Visitor status. Fares are 1,300 yen to Tennoji, 1,800 yen to Osaka/Shin-Osaka, 2,200 yen to Kyoto, 2,000 yen to Kobe, and 1,800 yen to Nara. Children pay half price, and a reserved seat in an ordinary car is included. This ticket is not sold directly at stations in Japan. Reserve it through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION, where sales open at 10:00 one month before departure and only credit cards are accepted, or buy it from an overseas travel agency. For an online reservation, bring your reservation number, the 4-digit authentication code you set, the credit card used for payment, and your passport when collecting in Japan. A green ticket machine also requires an IC-chip passport; otherwise use a staffed green ticket office. For an overseas agency exchange order, follow the voucher instructions and present your passport. The former ICOCA and HARUKA package could no longer be found on JR West’s website when checked in 2026/9; this one-way ticket is now the product offered.

  • You still need a seat reservation after buying the one-way ticket. Reserve a seat at the green ticket machine or counter when collecting it, or reserve one online at the time of booking.
  • The train has luggage storage areas and free Wi-Fi, with room for two large bags per passenger.
  • For the return trip to the airport on HARUKA, the weekday timetable revised in 2026/3 shows the last service departing Kyoto at 20:30, Shin-Osaka at 20:58, Osaka at 21:03, and Tennoji at 21:21, reaching the airport at 21:59. Plan carefully for late flights.

JR Kansai Airport Rapid: No Reservation and the Cheapest JR Option

The Kansai Airport Rapid is a rapid train that requires only the regular fare, so you can tap in directly with ICOCA. Kansai Airport to Tennoji takes about 45 min and costs 1,060 yen; Osaka Station takes about 70 min and costs 1,180 yen. The train then continues along the Osaka Loop Line to Kyobashi, taking about 75 min in total. For Shin-Osaka, transfer at Osaka Station to the JR Kyoto Line for one stop; the fare is 1,340 yen. The cars have no dedicated luggage area and are crowded during peak hours, but this offers a good balance of cost and convenience for travelers staying around Umeda, Tennoji, or Kyobashi. Take care on the return journey: Kansai Airport Rapid trains bound for Kansai Airport split at Hineno. JR West advises passengers to sit in the first four cars, as the wrong cars continue toward Wakayama.

Nankai Rapi:t and Airport Express: Best for Namba

Nankai’s platforms at Kansai Airport Station are in the same station building as JR, serving trains toward Namba. The Limited Express Rapi:t has reserved seats throughout and reaches Namba in as little as 34 minutes. Rapi:t α skips Kishiwada and Sakai, while β makes more stops; most services in the official timetable take about 38 to 41 min. On weekdays, the first train from Kansai Airport departs at 6:53 and the last at 23:00; on holidays, service runs from 7:06 to 22:55, with roughly one daytime train every 30 minutes. The fare consists of two tickets: a 970 yen base-fare ticket for the 42.8-kilometer journey from Kansai Airport to Namba, according to Nankai’s fare search, plus a limited express ticket. The Regular Seat costs 700 yen and the Super Seat 910 yen, with child fares of 350/560 yen. Buying the limited express ticket on board costs an additional 300 yen per ticket, while purchasing it online through 南海・特急チケットレスサービス, the Nankai Limited Express Ticketless Service, saves 150 yen. The Airport Express needs no limited express ticket, only the 970 yen base-fare ticket. It reaches Namba in about 45 minutes, stopping at Izumisano, Kishiwada, Sakai, Tengachaya, Shin-Imamiya, and other stations. If you have little luggage and are staying near Namba, the Airport Express is sufficient. Pay extra for Rapi:t if you want a guaranteed seat and a journey that is 10 minutes faster.

  • 関空トク割ラピートきっぷ, the Kanku Tokuwari Rapi:t Ticket: 1,560 yen for a Regular Seat or 1,740 yen for a Super Seat, with child fares of 780/980. It includes the base-fare and limited express tickets and is available from counters or ticket machines at Namba, Shin-Imamiya, Tengachaya, Sakai, and Kansai Airport stations. It is valid for 2 consecutive days from the first day of use and sold year-round.
  • ラピートデジタルきっぷ, the Rapi:t Digital Ticket: 1,410 yen for a Regular Seat or 1,590 yen for a Super Seat, with child fares of 710/910. Purchase it online with a smartphone and credit card. It is valid only on the specified date, and you may exit at Namba, Shin-Imamiya, Tengachaya, Sumiyoshi Taisha, or Sakai. However, Rapi:t itself does not stop at Sumiyoshi Taisha. To reach it, transfer at a Rapi:t stop to a Nankai train that stops there.
  • The tickets differ beyond how you buy them: the cheaper digital ticket is valid only on the chosen date and includes Sumiyoshi Taisha, but Rapi:t does not stop there, so transfer to a stopping train; the paper Tokuwari is valid for 2 consecutive days from first use and does not serve that station. For unused paper tickets, request a refund at the original sales location before the train departs; a 520 yen fee applies. The digital purchaser can refund an unused ticket online within its validity period until 5 minutes before departure, with no fee. Choose by date, station, and refund needs.

Limousine Bus: For Lots of Luggage and Hotels Near Bus Stops

Kansai Airport Transportation, KATE, limousine buses depart from directly outside the first floors of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Buy tickets from the outdoor ticket machines on the first floor. The driver loads your luggage into the luggage compartment, so you do not have to carry it up or down stairs. The disadvantages are the risk of traffic congestion and less frequent service than trains. Every Kyoto Line service toward the airport requires a reservation and assigned seat.

Taxis and Late-Night Arrivals

Estimated taxi fares listed on the Kansai Airport website, including the airport bridge toll and expressway tolls, are: about 50 min and 24,400 yen to Osaka’s Kita Ward; about 50 min and 23,320 yen to Osaka’s Chuo Ward; about 60 min and 25,480 yen to Shin-Osaka Station; about 50 min and 21,970 yen to Tennoji Station; about 50 min and 21,970 yen to Universal Studios Japan; and about 100 min and 43,150 yen to Kyoto Station. The taxi stand is on the first floor of Terminal 1. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber, DiDi, and GO also have designated pickup points. Split among four people, a trip to Umeda costs about 6,100 yen per person, more than a HARUKA One-way Ticket to Osaka at 1,800 yen per person, but avoids transferring with luggage.

Which Route to Choose for Namba, Umeda, Shin-Osaka, or Kyoto

  • Staying in Namba, Shinsaibashi, or Nipponbashi: the Nankai Airport Express is cheapest at 970 yen. With lots of luggage, pay an extra 700 yen for Rapi:t. The bus to Namba OCAT costs 1,400 yen, but OCAT is above JR Namba Station on the west side of Namba and remains some distance from Shinsaibashi.
  • Staying in Umeda or near Osaka Station: the Kansai Airport Rapid reaches Osaka Station directly in about 70 min for 1,180 yen. With lots of luggage, or if your hotel is near Hankyu Sanbangai or Herbis, the limousine bus takes about 60 min and costs 1,800 yen. A 1,800 yen HARUKA One-way Ticket also reaches Osaka Station in about 45 min with a reserved seat, at the same price as the bus. If you want to alight at Hankyu Sanbangai, check the exact Kansai Airport Transportation timetable first: many daytime buses skip it; the late-night bus stops there but not at Herbis OSAKA.
  • Staying in Shin-Osaka: the 1,800 yen HARUKA One-way Ticket provides a direct journey of about 51 min. The Kansai Airport Rapid requires one transfer at Osaka Station.
  • Staying in Kyoto: the 2,200 yen HARUKA One-way Ticket reaches Kyoto Station in about 78 min. The 2,800 yen limousine bus takes about 85 to 90 min to the Hachijo Exit; consider it only if your hotel is on that side and you have lots of luggage.
  • Staying in Tennoji or Abeno: the Kansai Airport Rapid takes about 45 min and costs 1,060 yen, while the 1,300 yen HARUKA One-way Ticket takes about 33 min.

How to Buy Tickets: Arrange Them Before Departure

  1. For HARUKA: before departure, buy the HARUKA One-way Ticket and reserve a seat through JR West’s online reservation service. After landing, bring the reservation number, 4-digit authentication code, payment credit card, and your passport to Kansai Airport Station. The green ticket machine also requires an IC-chip passport; otherwise use the staffed green ticket office.
  2. For Rapi:t: before departure, use your phone to buy the ラピートデジタルきっぷ, Rapi:t Digital Ticket, for a 1,410 yen Regular Seat, or buy the 1,560 yen 関空トク割 ticket from a Nankai ticket machine after landing. For the Airport Express only, tap in directly with ICOCA.
  3. Buy an ICOCA first: the JR green ticket office at Kansai Airport Station offers a version for visitors to Japan. It costs 2,000 yen, including a 500 yen deposit, and can then be tapped on Osaka Metro, Nankai, Hankyu, and buses.
  4. For the limousine bus: buy a ticket on arrival from the outdoor ticket machines on the first floor. The Namba OCAT route also offers an online digital ticket, one-way only.
