Choosing where to stay in Tokyo

Start with your daily destinations, arrival airport, and luggage needs, then compare the route from each hotel to the station entrance you will use. Nearby area names do not mean the same station.

Official sources checked:

  • Shinjuku

    Good fit
Consider Shinjuku if your plans focus on Shinjuku, Shibuya, and western Tokyo, with shopping, dinner, or evening city views.
    Transport trade-off
JR, private railways, and subway lines meet here. Numerous exits can complicate transfers and luggage routes; “near Shinjuku Station” alone is not enough.
    Before your stay
Check whether the hotel is on the east, west, or south side and map the route to the entrance you will use. If quiet matters, check whether the room faces a busy street.

  • Ueno / Asakusa

    Good fit
Consider Ueno for museums and parks, or Asakusa for Sensoji Temple and walks through traditional streets.
    Transport trade-off
For Narita Airport, compare the Skyliner from Keisei-Ueno. Asakusa mainly uses subway and Tobu services; Ueno's transfer options do not apply there.
    Before your stay
Identify whether the hotel is closest to JR Ueno, Keisei-Ueno, or a particular Asakusa rail line. With luggage, check the entrance and walking route.

  • Tokyo Station / Ginza

    Good fit
Consider the Tokyo Station area for onward Shinkansen journeys, or Ginza for department stores and dining.
    Transport trade-off
Tokyo Station serves JR and Shinkansen trains, while Ginza has several subway lines. They are separate stations; a Ginza hotel is not necessarily beside a Shinkansen entrance.
    Before your stay
Identify the nearest station—Tokyo, Ginza, or Yurakucho—and the exit side, such as Marunouchi or Yaesu. With luggage, check elevators and the walking route.

  • Shibuya

    Good fit
Consider Shibuya for fashion, music, and evenings out, with visits to Harajuku or Omotesando.
    Transport trade-off
JR, private railways, and several subway lines are available. Entrances and levels vary by line, so plan transfers using the specific line's entrance.
    Before your stay
Map the walk to your usual line, check for slopes, and confirm the last train for your return. If quiet matters, check the hotel's distance from nightlife streets.
