What Meta announced
According to a Meta Newsroom announcement dated September 23, 2026, Meta VR Glasses is a virtual reality (VR) device shaped much like a pair of glasses. VR devices place screens in front of your eyes to show computer-generated or 3D scenes. Meta says it weighs about 100 grams, roughly the same as a deck of cards, and claims it is five times lighter than Meta Quest 3, the company's current headset. Meta notes that the device has no head strap and is open at the sides. It also has a passthrough camera, which films the real world and shows it inside the glasses, so users can stay aware of their surroundings while watching content.
Meta also says it has built its Meta AI agent into the operating system. Users can play videos, open apps or adjust their workspace by voice, by looking at things or with hand gestures, with no controllers needed.

Two-piece design: how the glasses and compute puck split the work
Meta says the device can be this light mainly because its functions are split into two parts. The glasses themselves handle sensing and display. A separate compute puck, a small unit linked to the glasses by an optical cable, handles processing, battery and storage, and can be clipped to a pocket or bag.
| Component | Function as described by Meta | Related specs published by Meta |
|---|---|---|
| Glasses | Sensors and display; open at the sides with a passthrough camera | About 100 grams; 5K display built on micro-OLED panels (a type of very small, high-contrast screen) at 37 pixels per degree, a measure of sharpness where higher means crisper text; supports Dolby Vision, with Dolby Atmos spatial audio built into the frame |
| Compute puck | Processing, battery and storage, connected to the glasses by an optical cable | Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite processor; up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback; supports 45W fast charging |
| Compared with Meta Quest 3 | Meta says the new device is five times lighter than Quest 3 | Meta did not provide further item-by-item comparison data in the announcement |
Entertainment, work and calls: the uses Meta describes
Movies and streaming content
Meta calls Meta VR Glasses the first VR device to receive IMAX Enhanced certification, a label that IMAX gives to devices that meet its picture and sound standards. Meta says that starting in November, Disney+ subscribers in select countries will be able to stream 3D films such as Marvel's The Avengers and Marvel Studios' Black Panther. Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ will offer their 3D media catalogs for the first time. Meta also says thousands of titles will be available internationally at launch. It adds that it is working with James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision to debut blockbusters shown in 3D for the first time in 2027.
Live sports and gaming
According to Meta, it is partnering with ESPN on immersive sports broadcasts streamed in 8K with a 180-degree view. These start this year with college football on Meta Quest. Meta says that once the device launches there will be more than 100 immersive live sporting events each year, with partners including MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC. On gaming, Meta says more than 75 games playable with hand gestures alone will be available at launch, with more games streamable via Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Workspace and holographic calls
Meta says the device can show one or more large virtual screens anywhere and can turn any flat surface into a keyboard and touchpad. Meta is also introducing holographic calls, which use a lifelike digital version of the user to show their real-time expressions. Meta says the feature works with calling apps from WhatsApp to Zoom, and people joining from a phone or computer can also see that digital version on their screens.
What it means for everyday readers
- The product is not on sale yet: Meta says it will not go on sale until spring 2027, so for now only the official description is available.
- All specs are Meta's own claims: weight, image quality, battery life and content numbers all come from a single Meta announcement and await third-party testing after launch.
- Content availability varies by region: Meta notes that Disney+ 3D films will be offered only in select countries, so what you can actually watch may differ by region.
- A compute puck is required: the lightness Meta cites refers to the glasses themselves, while processing, battery and storage sit in a separate compute puck you must carry with you.
